I’m really curious how Eggnog became the undisputed king of Christmas cocktails. It’s the only drink that is inextricably linked to the holiday season, to the point where it would be strange to drink it any other time. Nothing else even comes close. I find it particularly odd given that it’s… not exactly the best cocktail. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a cup of Eggnog around the holidays – but usually just one. It’s so rich. It’s also not very versatile. I mean, you’re not serving Egg Nog as an aperitif.
It’s in that spirit that I’d like to humbly suggest that the Poinsettia officially be added to the roster of popular holiday cocktails. It already has the name, the color, and the seasonal ingredients. It’s a piece of cake to make – far easier than Eggnog! And it’s absolutely delicious – a bit like a sparkling Cosmopolitan. I’m amazed that it’s not more popular.
To make this festive beverage, all you need is cranberry juice, orange liqueur, and sparkling wine. I like to use Cointreau for my liqueur and Prosecco for the wine. You can play with the proportions to suit your taste and ingredients, but you’ll find my favorite recipe below.
History: While this recipe is popular and widespread, I can’t find any information on its origins. I’m not sure how long it’s been around or who created it. If anyone knows, please comment or email me!
Poinsettia
1.5 oz. cranberry juice
1/2 oz. orange liqueur
2.5 oz. sparkling wine
Combine chilled cranberry juice and orange liqueur in a champagne flute. Top with sparkling wine and garnish with several cranberries.
